Kitesurfing is an activity that has seen vast increases in its popularity lately. It is actually growing faster than any other water sport according to the governing body for kitesurfing. It is also one of the fastest growing extreme sports overall, and it seems people are ditching their snowboards in favour of kites, as snowboarding growth has recently been overtaken by this great sport . You will need to seriously work on your body however if you’re considering trying out the sport properly. These main areas are where your fitness focus should be.
- Upper Body Strength. As areas of general fitness go, this has to be among those of greatest importance to train. A vast amount of the forces you will experiences when taking part go through the upper body and these will be muscles you will need to focus on if you’re to stand any chance. The main muscles you should focus on are those of the shoulder, known as the deltoids. These act as stabilising muscles and also have to control a lot of force through the arms. Also pay attention to the muscle of the upper back and the major pectorals
- Core Strength. As your body tends to be pulled in lots of different directions and is under large amounts of force, you need to be able to stabilise it and have sufficient core muscle tone. One very good pierce of gym equipment that you can use to enhance your core is a Swiss Ball. Weights will also need to be including in your core work to enable you to replicate the force levels that you would experience when actually performing the sport. Often the kite will want to pull you in a direction you do not want to go so it will be your developed core strength that will let you remain planted
- Aerobic Fitness. Although the sport is arguable not aerobically centred, it does require a well developed heart and lungs. Various muscles groups will be under pressure constantly and so will be screaming out of large quantities of oxygen and will likely be producing substantial amounts of lactic acid and CO2. Without efficient heart and lungs to supply the oxygen and remove the waste products from the blood, you will become fatigued very quickly. Jogging or cycling are ideal methods for enhancing your CV (heart and lungs) system.
